2 - The Lost Fleet

Data storica: iniziavo a inserire i romanzi della 'The Lost Fleet' ma mai avrei immaginato che in un lontano futuro, anni luce nel campo dell'editoria, venisse pubblicato dalla Mondadori nella collana Urania, al n. 1679 del 3 Giugno 2020, il primo capitolo di una saga partita nel preistorico Luglio dell'anno 2006. Sono occorsi 14 anni perché la 'Dauntless' arrivasse finalmente nei nostri porti.

Auguriamoci che non trascorrano altrettanti anni per i rimanenti romanzi che sono stati pubblicati e arrivati ormai ai nostri giorni, Maggio 2019, con la sottoserie della 'The Genesis Fleet' e della sua astronave'Triumphant'.

John 'Black Jack' Geary has recently been rescued from a 100-year-old escape pod with a damaged beacon. He was the commanding officer of an early battle in what has become a century-old war between the Syndicate Worlds and the Alliance. His last actions in that battle led to his immortalization as a hero of the Alliance people and fleet, which by the time of the book has become blown out of proportion.

Still feeling weak from being frozen for 100 years, Geary arrives at what is supposed to be a decisive battle for the Alliance against the Syndicate. The battle turns out to be a trap and as the leaders of the fleet board a shuttle to negotiate surrender, the Admiral calls on Geary to lead the fleet if anything should happen to him.  Mere hours later after the Admiral is executed, he finds himself in command of 200 ships that have been badly beaten and are cut off from retreat.

Having been frozen while the hypernet technology was invented Geary realizes that while the faster hypernet gates are blocked, the Syndicate ships have left the old jump points unguarded. Geary commands his ships to feint then run for those jump points.

Dopo un secolo di combattimenti contro i corporati l'Alleanza è ormai allo stremo, con la flotta bloccata in territorio nemico. L'unica speranza è un uomo che, dopo essere tornato dal mondo dei morti, viene incaricato di portare in salvo la Dauntless, la nave ammiraglia, e la chiave dell'iper-rete per i viaggi interstellari che trasporta.

Il capitano John Geary dovrà dimostrarsi all'altezza della leggenda di "Black Jack Geary".

Badly damaged and low on supplies, the Alliance Fleet is raiding Syndic mines for raw materials-and Captain "Black Jack" Geary hopes they can continue to remain one step ahead of their enemies. Geary's victories over the enemy have earned him both the respect--and the envy--of his fellow officers.

"Black Jack" Geary has made many risky decisions as commander, but ordering the Alliance fleet back to the Lakota Star System where it had nearly been destroyed by the Syndics has his officers questioning his sanity. It's a desperate gamble that may buy Geary just enough time to prepare for the Syndics' inevitable return--and give the fleet a fighting chance of survival. But even as he struggles to stay one step ahead of the enemy, Geary must face conspirators within his own fleet: an unknown number of officers who want a change of command. And Geary knows that his fleet must stand together or the Syndic forces will tear them apart.

After successfully freeing Alliance POWs, "Black Jack" Geary discovers that the Syndics plan to ambush the fleet with their powerful reserve flotilla in an attempt to annihilate it once and for all. And as Geary has the fleet jump from one star system to the next, hoping to avoid the inevitable confrontation, saboteurs contribute to the chaos.

Now Victorious leads the charge again-and "Black Jack" Geary is in command.

As war continues to rage between the Alliance and Syndicate Worlds, Captain "Black Jack" Geary is promoted to admiral-even though the ruling council fears he may stage a military coup. His new rank gives him the authority to negotiate with the Syndics, who have suffered tremendous losses and may finally be willing to end the war. But an even greater alien threat lurks on the far side of the Syndic occupied space.
