Dove è finito il 4° ed ultimo libro della saga? Perché non è mai stato pubblicato? Forse la serie non aveva venduto bene? I lettori si erano stancati? Ai posteri l'ardua sentenza.

Con l'aggiornamento del 21 Settembre 2020 viene ultimata la saga, sono aggiunti pure altri due romanzi del solo Lee Gentry.

Rendezvous with Rama is a science fiction novel by British writer Arthur C. Clarke first published in 1973. Set in the 2130s, the story involves a 50-by-20-kilometre (31 by 12 mi) cylindrical alien starship that enters the Solar System.

Da notare il poco tempo trascorso tra la pubblicazione inglese e quella italiana.

Un misterioso, remotissimo corpo celeste viene segnalato dai radiotelescopi terrestri, e anche quando si scopre che la cometa, o pianeta, o asteroide, si sta avvicinando al sistema solare, la notizia appassiona soltanto gli astronomi. Ma ecco che gli osservatori identificano l'intruso: è un immenso cilindro metallico che ruota su sé stesso a velocità vertiginosa. Nessun dubbio è più possibile, si tratta di un manufatto, di un veicolo lanciato nello spazio da qualche prodigiosa tecnologia cosmica. Il comandante Norton riceve l'ordine di esaminare da vicino, con la sua astronave Endeavour, il silenzioso colosso, e se possibile di sbarcarvi, di agganciarlo, di esplorarlo, di prendere contatto con gli eventuali navigatori oltregalattici.

Ed è la storia di questa memorabile visita che Arthur C. Clarke, tornato dopo parecchi anni al romanzo, ci racconta col suo inimitabile piglio avventuroso e scientifico, ironico e drammatico, magistralmente realistico e carico di affascinanti aperture sull'universo.

La spettacolare avventura dell'uomo nei mondi lontani dell'immaginazione. Ancora una volta l'umanità guarderà preoccupato verso i cieli e le stelle chiedendosi da dove proviene Rama II, col suo corpo liscio e lungo almeno quaranta km. É il 2097. Una squadra di coraggiosi partirà per combattere contro il male e per scoprire la verità; ci riusciranno?

The book picks up the story nine months after the end of Rama II. The book follows the story of three astronauts from the expedition in Rama II who were trapped aboard the cylindrical alien spacecraft, Rama II, heading out towards deep space. Along the journey, five children were born by Nicole des Jardins from her relationships with Richard Wakefield and Michael O'Toole. After a twelve-year journey, they arrive in the vicinity of the star Sirius, where all eight rendezvous with a Raman Node.

At the Node they are subjected to physiological tests for a year while Rama is refurbished, and they are eventually sent back to the solar system, this time to collect two thousand more representatives of humanity. An Earth agency, known as the ISA, receives the message from Rama requesting two thousand humans. Upon its reception, the message is kept secret and, under the guise of a new Martian colony, the ISA starts acquiring its payload. The ISA selects a handful of their own representatives; meanwhile, they selectively gather convicts and promise them freedom if they are chosen to be a colonist. At this point the colonists believe everything is a hoax (despite the colossal size of Rama) created by the ISA. With that discontent as the tone upon their arrival, Rama III heads back to deep space with its new payload.

Meanwhile, Rama III determines that total escalation of the conflict is imminent and transmits an emergency signal to its ancient constructors.

Una pericolosa entità aliena con uno stratagemma deporterà milioni di terrestri in un posto chiamato "il giardino di Rama" allo scopo di ripopolare un ipotetico "eden" e poterli studiare. Riuscirà l'uomo, in base a princìpi quali giustizia e fratellanza a fondare una nuova comunità?

The book follows the story of Nicole Wakefield and her escape from imprisonment left at the cliffhanger of the previous book.

At this point, the humans had already come into contact with two alien species known as "octospiders" and "myrmicats". The octospiders were a simple species until a space-faring species made contact with them and forever changed their society. By undergoing genetic enhancements, the octospiders became biological wizards and were eventually able to form a utopia of sorts.

As the human colony continues to degenerate with respect to living conditions and human rights, the members of Nicole's family escape to the region nicknamed "New York", where they used to live in Rama II, and are eventually reunited with Richard.

The Rama spacecraft rendezvous with another Node, an enormous tetrahedron near the star Tau Ceti, designed to research any intelligent life capable of spaceflight. The humans are divided into two groups based mainly on the degree of xenophobia they had exhibited during the journey. One group will stay at the Node to be studied; the xenophobes are segregated and never allowed to see another alien again.

 Per i lettori che hanno apprezzato la colossale avventura cosmica di Incontro con Rama, ma anche per i neofiti, è arrivato il momento di conoscere la risposta ai dubbi e agli interrogativi suscitati da Arthur C. Clarke. La premessa è nota: un'evolutissima civiltà extraterrestre ha costruito enormi artefatti che permettono collegamenti fra le stelle per mezzo dei cosiddetti "nodi ramani". L'incredibile varietà di una di queste strutture (conosciuta come Rama II) rappresenta una sfida per i coloni umani che si sono stabiliti al suo interno. In questo romanzo scopriremo che altre creature abitano le profondità di Rama, forse ostili all'uomo. Così, gli esploratori di New York - come è stata denominata l'isola irta di guglie all'interno della cattedrale aliena - dovranno fare i conti con il segreto degli Octoragni, esseri simili a ragni che si muovono tra i molti livelli dell'oggetto-mondo.

È stata tradotta in più lingue oltre all'italiano, in diverse nazioni è stata pubblicata l'intera saga, in altre (poche, compresa l'Italia) solamente alcuni romanzi.

L' Autore

Sir Arthur Charles Clarke (Minehead, 16 dicembre 1917 - Colombo, 19 marzo 2008) è stato un autore di fantascienza e inventore britannico. Clarke è ai più noto per il suo romanzo 2001: Odissea nello spazio del 1968, cresciuto assieme alla sceneggiatura del film omonimo realizzato con ilregista Stanley Kubrick ed ispirato al racconto breve La sentinella dello stesso Clarke. Lo scrittore ha però al suo attivo una produzione letteraria assai estesa, tra cui la celebre serie di Rama. È considerato un autore di fantascienza hard o "classica", dato che una caratteristica saliente dei suoi romanzi è l'attenzione per la verosimiglianza scientifica. In suo onore l'orbita geostazionaria della Terra è stata chiamata "Fascia di Clarke". Egli infatti fu il primo ad ipotizzare, in un articolo pubblicato nel 1945, l'utilizzo dell'orbita geostazionaria per i satelliti dedicati alle telecomunicazioni.
