3 - Alex Benedict

Polaris is a Nebula Award-nominated science fiction mystery novel by Jack McDevitt. It is the second book of his Alex Benedict series.

60 years earlier the Polaris, a starship, was with a group of other starships witnessing the collision of a dwarf star with a planet (Jack McDevitt uses this dwarf star theory further in the novel, Seeker). For some mysterious reason, everyone disappears off the ship. No one can find them. Years, then decades go by. Polaris conventions pop up. Wild theories are proposed. Even a cult following!
But what really happened? And how and why do Alex and his lovely assistant Chase get involved?

3 - Seeker - Prima Pubblicazione Ace Books del Novembre 2005; $24.95; pg 360; ISBN 0-441-01329-5

Book three of the Benedict series. All the Alex Benidict books are set about 10,000 years in the future. So when one of Benedict clients come to him with a cup that came from a colony ship lost 9,000 years ago Alex sits up and takes notice. How did the cup get back to the known worlds? Where was the 9,000 year old ship it came from? Did the ship make it to it's mysterious destination? Is there a colony there now? These are the question Alex and his partner have to answer.

4 - The Devil's Eye - Prima Pubblicazione Ace Books del Novembre 2008; $7.99; pg 374; ISBN 978-1-4406-5312-4

Mai tradotto in italiano

The Devil's Eye, the fourth outing for the antiquities dealer and his Boswell and pilot. Rather than focus on lost artifacts, The Devil's Eye drops the characters into a missing persons case which turns out to have much broader ramifications than either Chase or Alex could have ever anticipated when they became involved in the disappearance.

Benedict is practically absent for much of The Devil's Eye, with McDevitt turning most of his attention to Chase Kolpath's first person account of her own activities as she works with Benedict, and on her own, to discover what happened to Greene during her own sojourn on Salud Afar. Much of the book almost seems a travelogue, as Kolpath and Benedict travel from tourist site to tourist site to interview people who had been in contact with Greene. Kolpath indicates that Greene's strength was her ability to create the mood necessary for horror novels. Invariably the places Kolpath visited had some ghost story associated with them, yet McDevitt did not take the opportunity to recreate the macabre sense of place that Greene was so good at depicting. However, it is important to note that McDevitt is writing a science fiction-mystery, not a horror novel.

5 - Echo - Prima Pubblicazione Ace Books/SFBC del Novembre 2010; $14.99; pg 384; ISBN #1312360

Eccentric Sunset Tuttle spent his life searching in vain for forms of alien life. Thirty years after his death, a stone tablet inscribed with cryptic, indecipherable symbols is found in the possession of Tuttle's onetime lover, and antiquities dealer Alex Benedict is anxious to discover what secret the tablet holds. It could be proof that Tuttle had found what he was looking for. To find out, Benedict and his assistant embark on their own voyage of discovery-one that will lead them directly into the path of a very determined assassin who doesn't want those secrets revealed.

5 - Echo - Urania n. 1593 dell'Aprile 2013.

Mai tradotto in italiano.

Firebird offers the familiar, but with enough additional layers that it doesn't feel repetitive. The story is fresh and McDevitt can explore new areas of the universe and characters, both of which have long histories which have only been hinted at in the books he has written so far. In Firebird, he not only postulates an intriguing mystery, but goes beyond to show societal change for his world. For those who haven't yet been introduced to his characters or worlds, McDevitt does an excellent job of introducing everything his readers need to know in a single book.

7 - Coming Home - Prima Pubblicazione Ace Books/SFBC del Novembre 2014; $14.99; pg 368; ISBN #139134

Mai tradotto in italiano.

Thousands of years ago, artifacts of the early space age were lost to rising oceans and widespread turmoil. Garnett Baylee devoted his life to finding them, only to give up hope. Then, in the wake of his death, one was found in his home, raising tantalizing questions. Had he succeeded after all? Why had he kept it a secret? And where is the rest of the Apollo cache?
